2012 – And So It Begins!

This is where it all started! The current NBA came into being in 2012, and what an exciting year it was! We had the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Olympic Torch relay around the country and then the Olympics themselves! What a year to kick things off!

For the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Newport Parish Council commissioned dozens of flags to show around the town, and the NBA joined in with patriotic window displays to celebrate the 60th year of Reign for Queen Elizabeth II. This was a particularly special occasion as, up until then, the only other monarch to reach this historic milestone was Queen Victoria – a well known fan of the Island. There were Union Jacks and red, white & blue bunting everywhere!

Fast forward 6 months and the NBA created a “Spot the Sport” competition to celebrate the Olympics, with lots of shops taking part with creative ideas to represent their chosen activities! Again, what a monumental year to start the Newport Business Association with this years Olympics being held in London! We really felt the patriotic spirit throughout the entire event and we know this feeling was unanimous throughout the country.

Two months later, once the excitement had settled down from an incredible Olympic games we come to October, when we held a Halloween event in which children had to find a different spooky character inside each participating shop, and were rewarded with scary stickers! Newport Business owners were encouraged to put the characters in hard to spot places to encourage a bit of a “spook hunt” around the premises, and the shrieks of joy when one was found was a delight for the shop-keepers and other customers for sure!

Below are some of the pictures from our first year, and what a fun year it was! On to the next.
